Blaven from Marsco
Description
On the Isle of Skye, the Red Cuillin and the Black Cuillin stand in striking contrast, each revealing a different character of the island’s geology and mood. The Red Cuillin, formed largely from granite, glow with warmer tones of rust and pink, their rounded peaks and gentler slopes offering a sense of openness and approachability. By contrast, the Black Cuillin rise sharply in dark gabbro and basalt, their jagged ridgelines and sheer faces creating an atmosphere of drama and severity.
Looking at the Map, I knew that the summit of Marsco would provide a great vantage point over neighbouring Blaven. We arrived on the summit in early afternoon, giving ourselves plenty of time to seek out some interesting foreground compositions and wait for sunset. We were initially underwhelmed by the possibilities, until we spotted a section of interesting looking rgranite further down the ridge, in the direction of Blaven.
It turned out to be a fantastic afternoon for mountain photography - the low winter sun providing perfect lighting conditions and a range of interesting compositions within a very small area. As sunset approached, the light kept getting better and better, and we waited until the very last light of day had disappeared before descending down to Sligachan in the darkness.
