Sunrise at the Old Man of Storr

from £105.00

Description

The Old Man of Storr is one of the most iconic natural landmarks on the Isle of Skye, rising dramatically from the rugged Trotternish Ridge. This towering rock pinnacle, shaped over millions of years by landslides and erosion, stands against sweeping views of sea, cliffs, and the rolling highland landscape.

I'd avoided visiting the Old Man for many years. When I first visited back in 2013, it felt like a wild and untamed landscape, and I'd been the only photographer at the viewpoint. Every subsequent trip was noticeably more crowded, and the location lost some of it's attraction. However looking back at the pictures I had taken over the years, I couldn’t help but feel I hadn't done justice to the beauty and majesty of the scene.

I approached this return visit in January 2026 as if it was a work task - I hoped for some nice sunrise light to strike the Old Man at sunrise, but I wasn't necessarily looking forward to the experience. Arriving well before sunrise, I established myself above the classic viewpoint, in amongst the cliffs that surround the pinnacle. I knew from previous visits this was the strongest composition. As a perfect winter sunrise unfolded before me, giving the best conditions I had ever had at this location, I immediately felt the same sense of joy and excitement I'd had on that first trip over a decade before.

The landmarks are iconic for a reason, and it was a timely reminder that I shouldn’t avoid the more popular locations of the highlands and islands.
